The pictures on this page start with the original Stock Cars that were racing at Kirkby (Liverpool) before Mick Smith took over and through the conversion to the space framed MOD STOCK CARS that proved to be one of the most exciting and spectacular forms of short circuit racing in the country in their time.
The first drivers came mainly from the Liverpool/Lancashire area but that soon changed when news of the awesome New Brighton track broke into circulation and when TRACKSTAR added the Boston track, it paved the way for East Anglian, Southern and Midland racers to joinTRACKSTAR. This took the registered MOD STOCK CAR drivers to over 200 and many of them travelled to the other TRACKSTAR tracks. Tarmac or shale didn’t seem to matter – regular racing did.
Annual British Championships were run with a series of Qualifying rounds at all the Stadiums throughout the year, to determine grid positions for the race itself with the highest points scorer starting at the front and so on. Regional championships were also up for grabs as were individual track championships, sponsored meetings and it wasn’t a surprise to see a TV celebrity or 2 presenting the trophies to the victors.
The top four points scorers, after each months gradings were issued with ‘Star’ status and had to start every race behind the ‘Reds’.
